Young girl hospitalised after being hit by ute

Lake Illawarra Police are appealing for witnesses after a child was run down by a vehicle at Shellharbour overnight.

A 12-year-old girl was struck by an unattended Ford utility about 6.20pm last night (Wednesday 28 March 2018), after it began rolling backwards at a theatre car park in Wentworth Street.

The girl’s father attempted to stop the vehicle before it ran over the girl and crashed into a street sign.

The girl was taken to Shellharbour Hospital before being airlifted to the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick where she remains in a stable condition.

Police from Lake Illawarra Police District were later notified of the incident and have commenced investigations.

Officers would particularly like to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it.
